Education in Urmston & Stretford

The borough of Trafford is known for its successful education system and is home to some great local schools.

One of the requirements that most homeowners look for is the standard of local schools.

Urmston Grammar is an academy located within the Trafford Local Authority area, and is listed in the top 100 grammar schools in the UK. The school was assessed as ‘outstanding’ in its most recent OFSTED report (2008), and in 2010, 60% of all GSCE exams sat at the school were awarded either an A* or an A. The majority of the school’s pupils go on to higher education and in 2005 90% of Urmston Grammar students progressed on to University.

Stretford Grammar School is a grammar school located in the town of Stretford. In 2012, two thirds of students achieved 5 GCSE’s grade A/A*, and a quarter of students achieved at least 10 grades at A/A*. Notable pupils include the founder of ‘Pineapple Dance Studios,’ Debbie Moore OBE.

Wellacre Academy is a secondary school for boys located in Flixton. The school serves 11-18 year olds from the local areas of Flixton, Urmston and Davyhulme but also educates pupils from Eccles, Irlam, Partington, Chorlton and Stretford. The academy is in an elite group of schools in England and Wales, which has been described by OFSTED as ‘an outstanding and happy school which knows itself very well.’ Over 97% of Wellacre Academy students gained 5+ A*-C GCSE’s back in 2011. The school opened a £7million 6th form in September 2009, and has also had investments into its science laboratories, photography studios and ICT suites.

Stretford High School is a secondary school based in the borough of Trafford. The school accepts all 11-16 year olds and has working partnerships with Manchester United Football Club and Lancashire Cricket Club. In its most recent OFSTED inspection Stretford High School was rated as ‘Outstanding.’

Trafford College is a further education college with four campuses located around Greater Manchester including Altrincham, Stretford and Manchester City Centre. Since it was established in 2007 the college has had over £50m worth of investment and holds a ‘Beacon’ status, placing it in the top 10% of colleges nationwide. Trafford College was graded as “outstanding” in five areas at its most recent OFSTED inspection and notable pupils include Take That star Jason Orange, and Stone Roses singer Ian Brown.
